What “alopecia” actually means

Alopecia is a general medical term for hair loss — it’s not a single condition, but a category that includes several distinct causes with very different treatments. The most common by far is androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss), but there are other types with different underlying causes, some autoimmune, some inflammatory, some purely genetic.

Common types of alopecia

Androgenetic Alopecia

Hereditary male or female pattern hair loss, driven by DHT and genetics. The most common type by far.

Alopecia Areata

An autoimmune condition causing patchy hair loss, often in round patches, unrelated to DHT or hormones.

Telogen Effluvium

Temporary, diffuse shedding triggered by stress, illness, or hormonal shifts (like postpartum shedding).

Alopecia areata specifically requires different treatment than pattern hair loss, often involving corticosteroids or other immune-modulating approaches determined by a dermatologist — it doesn’t typically respond to finasteride or minoxidil the way pattern hair loss does.

Is alopecia the same as male pattern baldness?

Male pattern baldness is one specific type of alopecia (androgenetic alopecia). “Alopecia” itself is a broader term covering multiple distinct causes of hair loss.

How do I know which type of alopecia I have?

Pattern, gradual thinning at the crown or temples usually indicates androgenetic alopecia. Sudden patchy loss, especially in round areas, is more characteristic of alopecia areata and warrants a dermatologist visit.

Does finasteride work for all types of alopecia?

No. Finasteride is specifically studied and approved for androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss). It’s not an appropriate treatment for autoimmune types like alopecia areata.
